On July 8, 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan crossed the Ohio River at Brandenburg, Kentucky and invaded Indiana. His army consisted of two thousand cavalrymen and a couple of cannons. While on a camping trip to Brown County State Park, we took the opportunity to use our camping sticker to inspect the campground and facilities in the Paynetown Recreation Area on the northern shore of the lake. Paynetown has an electric and a non-electric campground, hiking trails, boat docks, boat rental and picnic shelters.

The trail is rated as a moderate hike, 2 mile hike. Hikers will find themselves in a deep forest populated by beech, maple, tulip poplar and many other hardwood trees native to Indiana. The trail connects via a short spur to the campground at McCormick’s Creek and to Trail 8 on the eastern and western parts of the trail. The Markland Locks and Dam are located on the Ohio River 6 miles East of Vevay connecting Indiana and Kentucky by bridge on Indiana State Road 156 to Kentucky State Road 42. The Markland Locks and Dam provide extra depth for the Ohio River, allowing year round barge and boat traffic. The locks allow barges to travel upstream and downstream. A bridge across the concrete dam allow motor traffic between Indiana and Kentucky. Cinergy operates a hydroelectric plant at the site, providing electric power for a portion of the region.
