Podcast – Visiting the Shiojiri Niwa Garden

Greetings, in this episode we visit the Shiojiri Niwa Garden in Mishawaka, Indiana which is in St. Joseph County in north central Indiana.

My wife and I strolled through the Shiojiri Niwa Garden in Mishawaka, Indiana during a camping trip to Potato Creek State Park. This 1 1/3 acre garden includes over 20 varieties of shrubs and trees and many more smaller flowering plants. Over 200 boulders are scattered over the garden. Corydon – First Indiana Capitol Building

The Indiana Territory Legislature contracted with Dennis Pennington to build the new Territorial capitol at Corydon. Pennington was a builder and prominent citizen of Corydon and served as Speaker of the House. He began construction of the building in either 1811 or 1812. The building would serve as the Harrison County Court House at first, then as the territorial capitol when it moved to Corydon. When the legislature did move in 1813, they met in the building. Ryan White (December 6, 1971 – April 8, 1990)
The son of Hubert Wayne and Jeanne Elaine (Hale) White, Ryan was native to Kokomo, Indiana. When his parents had him circumcised at birth, the bleeding continued long after it should have stopped. The medical staff at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital diagnosed him with severe hemophilia A. Podcast – Road Trip to Indiana’s Early Coed College

This podcast recounts the history of one of Indiana’s first colleges to admit women, the Moore’s Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute. The college was established in 1854 and opened to students in 1856. It was one of only two colleges that admitted women in Indiana.
Moore’s Hall
Three story Moore’s Hall was constructed that year and served as the only building on the campus until 1908. The first female graduate was Jane S. Churchill in 1858. The college changed its name to Moores Hill College in 1887.
Carnegie Hall
Carnegie Hall was constructed in Moores Hill and would serve as the college’s main classroom. Moore’s Hall became the student dormitory after that.
Moore’s Hill High School
After the college moved to Evansville in 1917 the former college became the site for Moore’s Hill High School. The nickname for the school was the Moore’s Hill Bobcats. The high school closed in 1968. Carnegie Hall has been restored and currently serves as a museum, event venue and community center. Continue reading Podcast – Road Trip to Indiana’s Early Coed College
