Starve Hollow State Recreation Area is a small recreation area consisting of 285 acres, however it is adjacent to the 18,000 acre Jackson/Washington State Forest for more recreational activities. The ears are forming up nicely on my little patch of sweet corn. For those unfamiliar with corn’s method of pollination, the male flowers are held high above the plant on a structure called a tassel. To visit the Violet and Louis Calli Nature Preserve you will need to find County Road 40E, about a mile east of downtown North Vernon, Indiana on US 50. The gravel road begins just east of the bridge across the Vernon Fork of the Muscatatuck River. My wife and I strolled through the Shiojiri Niwa Garden in Mishawaka, Indiana during a camping trip to Potato Creek State Park. This 1 1/3 acre garden includes over 20 varieties of shrubs and trees and many more smaller flowering plants. Over 200 boulders are scattered over the garden.
