Autumn Leaves In Full Color
The Autumn leaves are in full color now, and it is a good time to drive through Skyline Drive in Jackson County, Indiana. This is a pretty area that my wife and I have driven through many times over the years, and we do not get tired of it. The vistas are quite similar to Brown County, but not nearly as crowded. Last week we camped at Starve Hollow Lake, near Vallonia, Indiana.

Starve Hollow Lake
Visitors to Starve Hollow Lake have access to a modern electric campground, hiking, fishing and picnicking. Kayak, rowboat and canoe rental is available, or you can bring your own. Many campsites are right on the lake shore, allowing you to launch your watercraft direct from your campsite. A large beach is available for swimming from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Restrooms, dressing facilities, showers, and food concessions are available to visitors. Wheelchair ramps allow access to beach and concession area. Several Rent A Cabins are available for visitors to rent, some right on the lake.

Starve Hollow Lake is smack dab in the middle of some of Indiana’s prettiest hill country, called the Knobstone Escarpment.
Knobstone Escarpment
The Escarpment includes some of Indiana’s most rugged terrain. It stretches from Brown County State Park in the north to the Ohio River. Elevations range from 360 feet near the mouth of the Wabash River to Weed Patch Hill, which has an elevation of 1,056 feet above sea level. This hill is in Brown County State Park and is the third highest area in Indiana. The Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive
The drive from Starve Hollow Lake over Starved Hollow Road is a pretty drive through a rural countryside. The trees at this time of year glow with a wonderful radiance fed by the golden sun. A steep climb up a narrow, winding road leads to five vistas, a picnic area and the fire tower.
The Vistas
The meandering road leads to five overlooks with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The pull off spots offer ample room to park, allowing visitors to pull over, as the road is quite narrow and winds around through towering trees. The Drive also boasts several picnic spots, shelters, and additional day hiking.

The Skyline Drive Fire Tower
The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed this 80-foot tall fire tower in 1935. It is no longer used to detect fires, however the Indiana Department of Natural Resources maintains it, as it is a popular place for people wanting to view the countryside.
Jackson-Washington State Forest

The Skyline Drive is located within Jackson-Washington State Forest, which is a popular camping, fishing and hiking facility.
