Established in 1966, Harmonie is one of Indiana’s newest state parks.

Located on the banks of the Wabash River, the 3,465 acre park features hiking, camping and picnicing in a serene setting a few miles from historic New Harmony. The varied landscape of Harmonie transforms from the flat Wabash River floodplains to the hilly terrain of the campground. Harmonie offers fantastic views of Indiana’s storied river, the Wabash. Sunsets can be spectacular from the Wabash River Picnic Area as the sun sets over the river. Picnicers can choose from seven other picnic areas scattered around the park. Its location about half an hours drive from Evansville and a few minutes south of Historic New Harmony make it an ideal spot from which to explore southeast Indiana.

We have stayed at Harmonie State Park a few times. We have not camped there, however there are 11 family cabins there which provide excellent accomadations. The cabins are generally four rooms with two bedrooms, kitchen and living room. The kitchens have a sink, range, microwave and refrigerator. Silverware is provided as well as many kitchen necessities. I think there was a coffee maker, however I did take my own. The main bedroom has a full size bed and some basic furniture. The other bedroom has bunk beds. The living room has a sofa and some chairs as well as a small dining table. A screened porch allows insect free enjoyment of the outdoors. A charcoal grill and fire pit are also part of the amenties. You do need to bring your own bedroom linens, towels, washcloths, etc. The cabins are an affordable way to stay in the area. Located adjacent to the campground, the cabins have access to Trails 2 and 5.

The highlight of the park is the Wabash River picnic area. Located along the beautiful Wabash River, picnic tables allow diners a magnificient view of Indiana’s River as it hurries south to its union with the Ohio River a few miles south.

Hikers will find almost 8 miles of hiking through deeply forested areas on easy to moderate hiking trails. The wide trails are well maintained with many wildflwers blooming along the way.

Equestrians have access to a 7.5 mile horse trail available for day use.

A large network of mountain bike trails on the south end of the park provides about 10 miles of biking opportunities.

The campground has 200 electrical sites. Twenty of these sites have 50-amp electrical service. All remaining sites have 30-amp. The campground features five modern comfort stations available. One of these is heated during the winter months. Campground occupancy is limited to two weeks.
Most sites will accommodate trailers or tents. Six ADA accessible sites are available. There are no individual water or sewer hookups at sites. The Dump Station is located near the campground entrance. Water is available throughout campground. There is a pay phone by the check in station. Youth tent camping available only where designated. Reservations through the Central Reservation System.

Visitors will find picnic areas scattered throughout the park. The Wabash River Picnic Area is the largest and located on the banks of the Wabash River.
Shelters include:
Hilltop Shelter
Tulip Shelter
Big Oak Shelter
Sweetgum Shelter
Pecan Shelter
These shelters may be reserved for family reunions, company functions or other events.

A public access site for launching boats on the Wabash Riveris available.
Harmonie State Park has an Olympic size swimming pool open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Anglers with an Indiana fishing liscense may cast their lines in the two wildlife ponds in the park or in the Wabash River.

The episode is based upon my book, South Central Indiana Road Trips, available on the web site, http://www.mossyfeetbooks.com. The book is the first book in the 9 volume Road Trip Indiana Series. The books include all the historical markers, as of 2022, in Indiana with the text and back story. The books also include a nearly complete listing of virtually every tourism destination in the state. The destinations include parks, museums, drive in theaters, bowling alleys, wineries and much, much more. I encourage you to visit the web site and subscribe to it.
You can find my books locally at the at the Romweber Marketplace in downtown Batesville, Indiana.
