The Week in Abe’s Beer Garden – Cabbage, Kohlrabi and More
We have been harvesting radishes, snow peas, lettuce for some weeks now from some plants placed in the garden in mid-March. Some other crops in the greenhouse are beginning to mature and will soon be ready for us to eat.

Kohlrabi
A member of the cabbage family, this odd-looking vegetable is sort of like an above ground turnip. It has a mild flavor which is quite sweet when roasted.

This is an early variety, Katarina, which is great to make into Cole slaw or steam with some onions.

Cauliflower
Cauliflower is good steamed with cheese or raw in salads. It is a great spring or winter crop. In summer it tends to get “ricey.”

Chinese Cabbage
Chinese cabbage is a great addition to lettuce cabbage and can make a great salad on its own. It stores well in the refrigerator.

The onions are planted in the garden and are growing nicely. These are from seed planted in January under the grow lights, transplanted to bedding packs. I planted them in the garden in early April.

Tomato Trellis
This is a new way for me to grow tomatoes. I built a “teepee,” structure on each end and used the structure to support a pole over the tomato plants. A string tied to the pole and fastened to the ground near the base of each plant will allow me to tie the plant to the string as it grows. I will plant cucumbers inside the teepee structures and allow them to climb up the structure.
