Ohio County had its beginnings with the formation of Dearborn County by Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison in 1803, thirteen years before Indiana became a state. The new county included territory now comprising Ripley, Franklin and Ohio Counties. Harrison made Lawrenceburg the county seat at that time. In 1811 Harrison separated Franklin County from Dearborn County. The Indiana General Assembly detached and created Ripley County in 1818. Native of Greensburg, Indiana, Carl Fisher worked to establish the automobile as the dominant form of transportation in the United States. His efforts led to improved highways, headlights for night driving and auto racing. He was a co-founder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was instrumental in the development of the track. Podcast – History of the Indiana State Park Nature Centers

The naturalist program at Indiana State Parks evolved from an early program established at Bear Mountain State Park in New York state. A visiting dentist from Illinois, inspired by the program at Turkey Run State Park in 1936, helped develop the fledgling nature museum program. Indianapolis artist Lucy Pitschler in began taking park guests on nature hikes in the 1920’s, which led to the development of the naturalist program in the state parks. The contributions of these, and many others, has led to the wonderful naturalist programs that park guests enjoy at most of the Indiana State Parks today.
