A favorite hike of ours is one I like to call the “Canyon Rim Hike”. This is my name, you will not find it on any park literature. We usually start this hike at Clifty Falls Shelter. We hike the east rim of the canyon, descend into Clifty Creek canyon, cross the creek and hike the west rim. This hike is just at eight miles long and takes us usually just under five hours. Suspension Bridge
The Suspension Bridge crosses Sugar Creek, connecting Trail 1 on the south side with Trails 3 and 4 on the north side. Completed in 1918 the bridge was constructed by the Lafayette Engineering Company. It replaced an earlier suspension bridge built on the site. The bridge is 202 feet long. Steel cables support the 4-foot-wide deck as they carry foot traffic across Sugar Creek. The 70 Steps Concrete staircase to the bridge was built in 1921. Starve Hollow State Recreation Area is a small recreation area consisting of 285 acres, however it is adjacent to the 18,000 acre Jackson/Washington State Forest for more recreational activities. To visit the Violet and Louis Calli Nature Preserve you will need to find County Road 40E, about a mile east of downtown North Vernon, Indiana on US 50. The gravel road begins just east of the bridge across the Vernon Fork of the Muscatatuck River. After turning south on the gravel road, you will travel about a quarter mile to the parking lot, which is on the left. The road dead ends at this place. Continue reading Calli Nature Preserve
Greetings, in May of 2023 during a camping trip to Shakamak State Park my wife and I visited the Waapaahsiki Siipiiwi Mound Historical Park. The park is located about 2 miles west of Indiana State Road 63 in Sullivan County about 2 miles southwest of the village of Fairbanks, Indiana. Jackson is a multi-use property. Hunting, fishing and trapping is permitted. The State of Indiana conducts periodic timber sales in the State Forests. The monies obtained by the sale of licenses, fees and timber go into the Heritage Trust fund that the State uses to procure more property. The State began acquiring the land that now encompasses Jackson-Washington in the 1930’s. The other activities offered at Jackson-Washington are camping, hiking, boating, fishing and horse trails.
