Building a Worm Farm
I recently constructed a worm farm to put kitchen waste in and have the worms reduce it to compost and worm tea. The worm compost can be used as a potting soil ingredient and soil amendment for the garden. Worm tea is a brown liquid that drains out of the tubs and is collected and used to water seedlings or plants in the garden. I used 3 plastic tubs to make the worm farm. The bottom tub is used to collect the worm tea and has a spigot installed on the bottom. When the tea accumulates, I can put a bucket under the spigot, open it and pour the tea into the bucket.
The upper 2 tubs have 1/4-inch holes drilled about 1 inch apart. Worms are placed in the lower bed, which has compost added to it before the worms go in. As kitchen waste is added, the worms consume it, creating composted worm manure. When all of the waste in the bin is consumed, the second bin has a layer of compost added to the bottom and placed on top of the first one. The worms migrate up through the holes and into the upper one and begin to eat the waste in that one. The lower bin is then pulled out and the compost harvested. The process repeats.
